Is diluting sanitizer safe?

Direct answer - NO

Recently, since the outbreak of COVID-19 virus, there has been increase in demand of hand sanitizers. This has lead to shortage of sanitizers in the market.
Due to such shortage, people have started diluting sanitizer with water in order to increase the quantity and use it for long time. They either use this diluted form to clean hands or to clean furniture.

Firstly, sanitizers can be alcoholic or non-alcoholic. Researches over the period of time have shown that non alcoholic hand sanitizers fail to prove their effectiveness and alcoholic hand sanitizers are more effective in helping your skin get rid of the micro organisms present there.

The effectiveness of an alcoholic sanitizer depends on the percentage of alcohol content in it. Next time you buy a sanitizer, do check the percentage concentration of isopropyl alcohol in it.

The alcohol you drink and the Alcohol you apply to clean your hands are different !!
Check out more details here 👇.

ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL (rubbinng alcohol) is a form of alcohol made in laboratory especially for the purpose of sterilization outside the body. This is different from the ethyl alcohol (drinking alcohol) available in market in the form of wine/beer and similar.

The percentage of alcohol content in a sanitizer plays a very important role in its effectiveness to sterilize any surface. The concentration of alcohol present in a sanitizer should be minimum 60%. Any concentration lower than this, decreases it's effectiveness to sterilize the surface. Higher the concentration of alcohol in a sanitizer, higher is it's effectiveness in killing the bacteria and virus present on the surface.

The sanitizers availabe for household purpose usually have alcohol concentration ranging from 60%-95%.

Hence diluting the sanitizer using water would mean decreasing the percentage of alcohol content in the sanitizer, thereby decreasing the effectiveness of any sanitizer.

It would be better to use the sanitizer as it is, without diluting it. And in case of shortage of sanitizers, use soap for hand cleaning and cleaners such a dettol liquid or lizol for effective cleaning of furniture and such stuff.

Method of using sanitizer on skin-

Apply on dry skin and rub it till 20 seconds or untill it is dry.

And yes one last point !

Hand wash using soap and water
is always superior to using hand sanitizer.
