With so many varieties of mask available in the market currently, let's see if you actually NEED N95 MASK TO PROTECT AGAINST COVID-19?
N95 MASKS are definitely better than a cloth mask or a surgical mask in terms of providing protection.
But-
The fact is many people out there don't have enough knowledge about this mask and where these masks are actually to be used. A few months ago many people didn't even care to know about this mask. Even now, many don't know the exact name of these masks. They use it just because it 'seems' to be more protective than the normal surgical masks.
To be precise this is how N-95 mask looks like-
These are specialized to prevent entry of small sized aerosols (very light particles which can float in air for long).
This is the image of a surgical mask often referred to as 'saada mask' in hindi by general people. These are designed to protect against air pollution and droplet transmission-
Corona or COVID-19 virus spreads in form of droplets. These droplets are heavy and settle down on surfaces soon after coming out from the source. So far the transmission of CORONA virus through air in normal population is not found in any country.
The important way of protecting from CORONA virus is by preventing the entry of virus into our body. The entry points of corona virus into our body are-
The size of COVID-19 virus is more than other virus hence even a cloth mask or a surgical mask can provide enough protection.
Masks do provide a good layer or protection, BUT what is more important is the way of using the mask and the level of hygiene you observe while touching your face.
It has been observed that people tend to touch the face more while using a mask.
'There is no point of wearing a mask or cloth around your nose, if you keep on touching or adjusting it again and again'.
because the virus if attaches to your hand/fingers, will also come in contact WITH your skin around your nose, mouth or eyes when you touch the area around mask to adjust it or remove it.
Scientific research's tudies have stated that N95 or Surgical mask provide an equal degree or protection against airborne viral infections. Also surgical masks are more comfortable for most number of patients including old age patients as they require less respiratory work.
So far no government and not even W.H.O. has given out any importance to public use of N-95 masks. Infact acording to W.H.O. masks should only be worn if you have symptom or are coming in contact with a person with symptom or in public places.
Also this also the reason why many celebrities out there are posting out videos promoting making masks at home using handkerchieves or dupatta.
Some other reasons why you should not buy N-95 mask-
- it is costly
- it takes time to make the mask
- the general people using it, deceases it's stock for the doctors, who require while treating corona patients.
You might have come across news stating lack of N-95 mask and other personal protective equipment (PPE) for the doctors. That's where the role of general people comes into play.
